Frank Chinasa, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the February 25, 2023 Presidential/National Assembly Elections for Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State, announced on Friday that he is relinquishing his claim to the seat in favor of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
Following the election, Chinasa had filed a petition with the Elections Petition Tribunal in Umuahia, the state capital, seeking to invalidate Kalu’s election due to alleged discrepancies in his name and to assert himself as the rightful winner.
However, on August 22, 2023, the tribunal upheld Kalu’s election, dismissing Chinasa’s petition for lacking merit.
In a press conference held in Abuja, Chinasa expressed his decision not to pursue an appeal, citing his belief that Kalu was effectively representing their constituency. He emphasized that Kalu, as the sixth-ranking figure in the country’s political hierarchy, was well-suited for the role he currently holds in the National Assembly.
Chinasa stated, “While many expected me to continue the legal battle through the appellate courts, I am here to announce that I am no longer interested in pursuing the matter beyond the tribunal. This signifies my choice to let go of the case.”
He clarified that this decision was not influenced by judicial timidity or external pressure but was made out of brotherly love and a shared commitment to their shared heritage in Bende.
Chinasa also expressed gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering loyalty throughout the ordeal, urging them to understand his decision. He explained that even if he were to win the case in court, he might not assume the role of deputy speaker, potentially squandering a significant opportunity for their constituency.
In conclusion, Chinasa pledged to continue offering constructive criticism of Kalu’s actions and inactions for the betterment of their federal constituency while respecting the current representation by Kalu.
